The BACS-UCL Canadian Studies programme will be holding its next on-line meeting, hosted by UCL Institute of the Americas, on Monday 12 June at 19.00 (UK time; 2pm EDT) until 20.30 (UK time; 3:30pm EDT). This will be a panel discussion on the recent Alberta election held on 29 May. This saw the governing United Conservative Party re-elected with 52.6% of the vote and 49 seats.
The opposition New Democratic Party led by former Premier Rachel Notley increased its share of the vote compared to the 2019 election to 44.0% and an increase of 15 seats in the legislative assembly to 38 seats. This was not enough however to prevent a third term for the UCP led by its new leader Danielle Smith.
The panel will consider the key issues that shaped the election campaign and its outcome, whether Alberta politics will be increasingly polarised and what sort of agenda the UCP will implement both for Alberta and for its relations with Ottawa.
The panel will include distinguished commentators on Alberta and Canadian politics: Geoffrey Hale (University of Lethbridge), Roberta Lexier (Mount Royal University, Calgary) and Patrick Holdich (UCL Institute of the Americas). The event will be chaired by Tony McCulloch (UCL Institute of the Americas). The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A with members of the on-line audience
